The e-Geo (Center for Geographical and Regional Planning Studies of the New University of Lisbon), the CECS (Research Centre for Communications and the Society of the University of Minho) and the SOPCOM (Portuguese Association of Science and Communications) have been entrusted with the organisation of the first European Regional Congress of Visual Semiotics which take place from the 26th to the 28th September 2011 in Lisbon. The International Association of Visual Semiotics convenes every two years the most important scientific manifestation in this domain. As from 2011, the Association has also decided to set up intermediate regional congresses, and Portugal has been chosen for the first European meeting of this kind.

This first edition, which will take place at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the New University of Lisbon, will have as its theme “Semiotics of Space/Spaces of Semiotics”. It will gather together a hundred researchers coming from all corners of Europe.
